The
information that follows is designed to answer many questions
most patients have about what a periodontist does and what to
expect when you first see us.
|
|
What
is a periodontist? |
|
A
periodontist is a dental specialist in the diagnosis,
prevention, and treatment of periodontal diseases and in the
planning, placement, and maintenance of implants.
Bad breath, bleeding, or receding gums and bone loss that
are caused by oral bacteria, if left untreated, can lead to
tooth loss.
Approximately 75% of all Americans have some form of
periodontal disease, known by many as gum disease or
“pyorrhea.” |
|
Your
first visit |
|
The
first visit is our opportunity to learn about you and your needs
while you become acquainted with us.
You will be given a thorough examination of your mouth,
teeth, and gums.
Afterwards, you will be given a consultation and
assessment of our findings with various recommended treatment
options.
Adequate time will be available for you to ask questions
and you will be informed about every step of your treatment. |
|
Strict
infection control |
|
The
latest barrier technologies and methods of sterilization are
used in this office to maintain strict standards of infection
control for your safety. |
|
You
will be treated gently |
|
Our goal is to
render periodontal care without fear, pain or anxiety.
Topical anesthesia and/or local anesthesia via Novocain
are used to block sensations, allowing treatment to be performed
comfortably. Pre-medication
and/or nitrous oxide “sweetair” are used to help relax you
if you’re anxious.
|
|
Quality
care |
|
Like
other areas of medicine and dentistry, periodontics is advancing
at an extraordinary pace. We can correct conditions today
that were not treatable less than 10 years ago.
For example, regenerative procedures exist to help
restore lost bone. Receding
gums causing root exposure may be treatable with plastic
surgical procedures. Missing
teeth can be replaced with dental implants. Dr. Kaner prides
himself in taking 100-200 hours yearly of advanced training in
periodontics and implants.

|
We
are part of your dental treatment team |
|
If you were
referred by your general dentist or another specialist, we will
work closely with them. We
will remain in constant communication with your dentist
throughout your treatment, as well as after it is completed.
|
|
Emergency
care |
|
When emergency
situations arise, we will do our utmost to respond to your
problem promptly. If
such a problem does arise, please, call us as early in the day
as possible to give us adequate time to fit you into our
schedule. If an
emergency arises when the office is closed, the answering
service will direct your call to Dr. Kaner or whomever is on
call if he is not available.
|
|
Telephone
calls |
|
You are encouraged
to call with any questions you
have concerning your dental problems.
Our office staff is well qualified to answer most
questions. If the
call requires Dr. Kaner to speak with you, he will return your
call at the earliest opportunity.
|
|
Recall
visits |
|
Your regular
preventive dental health care is a very sound investment.
While the responsibility for returning for this treatment
rests primarily with you, we will try to verify your appointment
by telephone. At
the time of your recall visit, please, advice us of any changes
in address, telephone number, health, medications being taken,
marital status, employment, and insurance coverage.
|
|
Fees
and payments |
|
We
will make every effort to keep down the cost of your dental
care. You can help
by paying at the time of your visit.
If your treatment program requires several visits, you
will be given an estimate and asked to discuss financial
arrangements with our business office staff.
This office accepts checks VISA ®, MASTERCARD ®,
AMERICAN EXPRESS ® and cash.
|
|
Insurance |
|
Please, be aware
that no insurance company attempts to cover all dental costs.
Some companies pay fixed allowances for certain
procedures and others pay a percentage of the charge.
It’s your responsibility to pay any deductible amount,
co-insurance, or any other balance not paid by your insurance
company. We
will be happy to help you receive the maximum benefits you are
entitled to. However, please, remember that the agreement of the
insurance company to pay for your dental care is a contract
between you and the company.

|
